When sports rules go awry

چکیده
Mike Wright (Wright, M. OR analysis of sporting rules – A survey. European Journal of Operational Research, 232(1):1-8, 2014 ) recently presented a survey of sporting rules from an Operational Research (OR) perspective. He surveyed 21 sports, which consider the rules of sports and tournaments and whether changes have led to unintended consequences. The paper concludes “Overall, it would seem that this is just a taster and there may be plenty more such studies to come”. In this paper, we present one such study, by looking at specific examples where the rules of sports have led to unforeseen and/or unwanted consequences. It is hoped that through this, and other such studies, sports authorities will be far better equipped to make more informed decisions about changing the rules for a given sport/tournament. We believe that this is the first time that such a comprehensive review of sporting rules, which have led to unexpected consequences, has been published in the scientific literature.

Challenges in Automated Elicitation of a Controlled Bilingual Corpus
In this paper we will address an uncommon but important approach to automated learning for MT, namely learning of translation rules from carefully elicited sentences. The approach is uncommon for good reason — anyone who has tried linguistic field work knows that elicitation will go awry if not carefully monitored by a human. We will address eight challenges of automated elicitation and discuss...
متن کاملThe Legal and Regulatory Environment of the Internet
The legal environment of the Internet has often been compared with the Wild West in the days of the American frontier. This analogy is used to convey the wide open and freewheeling atmosphere that pervades this area of the law. The Internet, like many other technological phenomena, is developing along several parallel directions. The main line is the technology direction—those facets of network...
متن کاملAberrant epigenetic landscape in cancer: how cellular identity goes awry.
Appropriate patterns of DNA methylation and histone modifications are required to assure cell identity, and their deregulation can contribute to human diseases, such as cancer. Our aim here is to provide an overview of how epigenetic factors, including genomic DNA methylation, histone modifications, and microRNA regulation, contribute to normal development, paying special attention to their rol...
متن کاملWhen replication travels on damaged templates: bumps and blocks in the road.
Escherichia coli can accurately replicate their genome even when it contains hundreds of damaged bases. In this situation, processes such as DNA repair, translesion DNA synthesis, and recombination all contribute to the cell's ability to successfully complete this task. However, under conditions when these reactions go awry, these same processes can result in cell lethality, mutagenesis, or gen...
متن کاملProspection: experiencing the future.
All animals can predict the hedonic consequences of events they've experienced before. But humans can predict the hedonic consequences of events they've never experienced by simulating those events in their minds. Scientists are beginning to understand how the brain simulates future events, how it uses those simulations to predict an event's hedonic consequences, and why these predictions so of...
